To find more parasites was inevitable due to fabricated flash-back memories that allowed them entrance into their lives and their home. It was revealed that their beloved Uncle Steve was a parasite in disguise, dragged in on the bottom of Rick’s shoe from his last galactic adventure causing the whole house to be locked-down. It’s Beth, Jerry, Summer, Morty, and… their Uncle Steve? When Rick walked in, you suspected something to be off, or that the creators of the show decided to toss in a new character. There you see a family of five eating dinner around the table, laughing and recalling memories.
That's what was so seemingly different about the start of this episode. If you've previously seen Rick and Morty, you'd know that this show doesn't ever do normal. However, the Ricklantis Mixup was a spectacular piece of entertainment that showed Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon can still combine puerile jokes and catchphrases with ingenious satire and topical messages. And, despite the opening episode breaking up the family with Beth and Jerry agreeing to a divorce, the series’ finale scrapped any character development to bring the squabbling lovers back together. Pickle Rick was an abhorrent transformation, the Vindicators was an unfunny and bitter mess, and the ABCs Of Beth was so bad it’s impossible to remember. Unlike the first and second season, Rick and Morty’s third outing was largely an underwhelming sack of spoiled goods. Rather than potty jokes designed to sell t-shirts and posters, as well as to brainwash society into worshipping the almighty Rick Sanchez, Rick and Morty needed more topical and clever humour and worlds similar to the Ricklantis Mixup.
This was all cleverly achieved with a population of Ricks being forced to undertake menial positions at a factory, and it made Rick and Morty one of the only media sources to confront the controversy in a morally grey manner. Instead of merely blaming the working class and calling them inbreeds with braindead babies, showrunners Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon showed how they were oppressed and desperate victims duped into voting for change. However, season 3’s best episode was undoubtedly the Ricklantis Mixup.ĭespite 2017 being a suffocating year where nobody could escape the constant backlash and recycled negativity surrounding Donald Trump becoming President of the United States, the Ricklantis Mixup was a refreshing spin that criticised the appointment in a unique and necessary way. The Rickshank Redemption was a great opening that has ruined the lives of every McDonald’s employee, and Rest and Ricklaxation was an amusing insight into the toxic selves inside all of us. Yes, Pickle Rick was an annoying runt that needed to be squished, and the Vindicators was a mess and bitter parody of The Guardians Of The Galaxy, but there were a few good episodes. Okay, maybe not all of season three was nearly as bad as Family Guy. It’s sad and hurts to say, but a lot of Rick and Morty season three was as juvenile as Family Guy. Yes, Rick and Morty has always had its purposefully random and dumb catchphrases like ‘wubba lubba dub dub’, but they were always tolerable and slightly amusing because they were interchanged with clever and dark humour that made Rick and Morty so much more than just another cartoon show that contains naughty language.
Shouting ‘I’m Pickle Rick’ over and over again wasn’t funny, and the way society turned it into a suffocating meme was unbearable. One of the biggest highlights of season three was Pickle Rick, and it’s not an understatement to say that the improv toy in all-female prisons was an irksome runt that needed to die rather than be turned into a worldwide phenomenon. But, with season three, it’s hard to fondly remember most of what happened as a large portion of the episodes were either lame or merely average because the writing relied mostly on puerile jokes that society ruined by turning into even unfunnier memes.
Lawnmower Dog remains a fan-favourite with Scary Terry being an unforgettable parody of horror icon Freddy Kreuger, Rick Potion #9 is still the series’ darkest episode with the infamous pair having turned their reality’s population into Cronenberg monstrosities, and The Ricks Must Be Crazy is both clever and juvenile.
